Cookie notice

This cookie notice explains what quilldrift.pro stores in your browser and why. I keep it short on every page footer and longer here for anyone who wants detail without jargon where possible.

What is a cookie? A cookie is a small text file a site asks your browser to remember. It can hold a preference, a token, or a timestamp. Cookies can be first-party (set by the site you visited) or third-party (set by another domain embedded in the page). Quill Drift minimises third-party cookies unless you choose to load embedded maps.

Strictly necessary. One first-party cookie remembers whether you accepted, rejected, or customised cookie choices. Without it, the banner would appear on every visit and your decision would not persist. This storage is required for the consent mechanism to function. It does not track you across other websites.

Preferences. If you enable preferences in the cookie panel, the site may store small local values about display choices related to this blog. These values stay on your device and are not used for advertising profiles.

Embedded content (Google Maps). Several pages include a neighbourhood map loaded from Google Maps in an iframe. Loading the iframe may allow Google to set or read cookies according to Google’s policies. I do not control Google’s cookie names or lifetimes. If you reject embedded content or disable it in settings, the site shows a placeholder instead of loading the iframe until you opt in.

What we do not use. Quill Drift does not set analytics cookies, remarketing cookies, or social sharing cookies. There is no Facebook pixel, no heatmap script, and no A/B testing framework. The site is intentionally small.

How to change your mind. Use the “Cookie settings” link in the footer to reopen the panel. You may accept all, reject all, or customise categories. Your browser also lets you delete cookies site-by-site or globally; consult your browser help pages for steps. Deleting cookies resets this site’s remembered choices.

Duration. Consent cookies persist until you clear them or until they expire by browser rules. I do not design them to linger unnecessarily. If I change durations, this page will say so.

Contact. Questions about cookies: [email protected].

Disclaimer. This notice describes practices for my personal blog only. Third-party providers may update their policies independently. This page is not legal advice.

Thank you for reading. Defaults here favour privacy — maps wait for your choice — because a neighbourhood blog does not need to follow you home.

Cookie name. The consent cookie uses the name configured for this site (qd_consent). It stores a compact representation of your choice — accept all, reject all, or customised categories. It is not used to identify you personally across other websites.

Local storage. In addition to cookies, your browser may store preference values locally when you save customised settings. Clearing site data removes them. This storage is functionally similar to cookies for your choices, but lives in a different browser bucket; clearing one may not clear the other unless you clear both.

Google Maps specifics. When embedded maps load, Google’s servers receive requests that include technical data such as IP address and referrer. Google may set its own cookies or use similar technologies. I do not receive a list of those cookies. Consult Google’s documentation if you need detail beyond this summary. The placeholder shown when maps are off contains no Google request.

Browser controls. Major browsers let you block third-party cookies, block all cookies, or delete cookies on exit. Mobile browsers offer similar controls in settings. If you block strictly necessary cookies, the consent banner may reappear each visit because the site cannot remember your decision.

Updates to this notice. If I add a feature that requires new storage — unlikely on a personal blog — I will update this page before or alongside the change. Minor clarifications may happen without ceremony, but material changes will be obvious in the text.

Examples (illustrative). Accept all: consent remembered, maps load on pages with map slots. Reject all: consent remembered, maps stay placeholder until you opt in via settings. Customise with embed off: preferences saved, maps remain off until you toggle embed on and save again. These flows exist so you can read without being surprised by sudden iframe loads.

No sale of data. I do not sell cookie data because there is no cookie data commerce here. The site does not participate in ad exchanges. Your reading habits on Quill Drift are not inventory.

The map is hidden until you choose to show embedded content.
